My mom was one of those people in one of those crowded stores around Christmas trying to get a CPK doll. I remeber that when she finally got back she didn't try to hide the bag; instead she took the doll out of the bag and handed it to me. With this she said, 'I will never go to another toy store again'. And she didn't, my dad was in charge of all toy buying from that point on. I still have that Cabbage Patch Kid doll to this day and I will never forget seeing news footage from across the country of parents going wild trying to grab dolls.
-pinkhippie 1977 I loved these dolls! My dad always joked with me and my sister that if we didn't take care of them, he'd chop them up and make them into cole slaw! Needless to say, we always did... Until one Christmas Eve, my new Bathing Fun CPK was left out in the living room, and my dog gnawed her hand off... Oh, I didn't even TALK to my dad for a week after that! I was convinced he'd used her as a midnight snack. -Stace-Bird 1981 I was completely and utterly TERRIFIED of the Cabbage Patch Kids. To a three year old, they were BEYOND scary-looking. Their faces...agh....they still make me cringe. I was so afraid of Cabbage Patch kids that my cousin would take her Cabbage Patch doll and chase me around the house with it...saying it was going to eat me. Naturally, i believed every word she said. The height of my fear came when my mom took me to the park one day. Under the tire swing, some little girl must have left her Cabbage Patch kid there. Since I loved the tire swing, I ran up to it. When I saw the doll, I ran for my life. I ran to my mom and told her that we HAD to go back home. NOW.And, after all, it WAS the '80s. There were more Cabbage Patch kids in the world than there were people. So I led a childhood full of fear. -filburtgirl 1983 I remember they smellled sooooooooogood. My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy! Boys don't know. They did smell good! -Evil Amber 1983 December, 1984. 11 years old and in the 6th grade. I was so angry at best friend hanna when she showed me "Lisa Melinda" and said "No one can find them in stores." -yaya613 1972 I didn't even know what the hell a Cabbage Patch Kid was. I remember my mom and grandmother admiring someone else's kid's CPK. I said it was ugly. After forcing me to say I wanted one. My mom ended up being one of those crazy women lined up for the doll. That was 10 CPK ago. -Jamero77 1977 OMG....The Cabbage Patch on the picture w/ the red hair is the exact same one I had. My very first Cabbage Patch Doll. I carried her everywhere I went. I even remember her name, Manuela Brandy. My mom was one of those that had to fight for one in the department store just so I could have it for Christmas. I remember the local news covered that story and I saw my mom grabbing some woman on TV. Needless to say it was a great Christmas. -TRAYSEEE 1975 Little sisters are the spawn of satan I tell yah. My three year old sister decided she would pen of the face of one.The purple didn't come out.*sob*And i am emotionally damaged. I had two. They had hillbillie names. They also had these little adoption things.I thought it was peculiar these things apparently came from a cabbage patch.I was a gullable kiddo. -riverscuomofloatsmyfruitloops 1985 i was never allowed one, mum thought they were too ugly. Years i waited. one day i'm gonna get one - just to spite her! -Beckyfuds 1984 Oh my god! I feel so deprived...Does anyone else remember the sew your own Cabbage patch doll kits? They were just a carcass and a head and you had to stuff them yourself. I never got a "real" cabbage patch kid, my grandma made these for me. I distinctly remember watching her stiching up the puckered stiches for his cute little butt. His name(they came with names too) was Tommy. I had a girl (Jessica) and a boy with dark skin and brown hair named Eric. Does anyone elese remember these? -LittleBlackCat 1985 I remember all of the hype about them... People were basically trampling each other and small fights broke out over these dolls. I'm not sure if my grandparents got in fights, but they may have. When I got her for my 5th birthday they brought her in in a garbage bag. At first I didn't like her and I do remember calling her a Garbage Patch Doll... But Bella Arabella certainly grew on me! I was very upset when I left her at school one weekend. When I went back on the Monday morning I found her it the house area of our kindergarten room in the fake freezer. I knew after that I was truely attached to her! Her one eye is scratched and half missing, she came that way. The company was supposed to send us a new one for her, but they never did. I love her just the way she is though! -WordCobbler 1979 It's a shame children today don't treasure the simplicities of life such as CPK dolls . I don't remeber when I received my first Cabbage Pack Kid, I think she may have been my first doll though. Her name was Paula and she was my bestest friend. My cousins would tease me because the doll and me looked like twins. I still keep her in my room now, just to remember all that I've been through. -nikki19 1982 These were the ugliest dolls ever made! I still can't understand the appeal of them. Some stupid parents would wait in line for hours at toy stores to buy these dolls for their kids, or even go to out of the country to hunt them down so their little darlings wouldn't be disappointed. Ridiculous! People got into fights over them in stores--great way to be a role model for your kids! All that fuss over a homely doll. -Jasperella 1964 Living in Farmingville, New York, until about 1984, Cabbage Patch Kids were the coolest thing. The more you had, the cooler you were. My first Cabbage Patch Kid's name was Olivia. I thought I was the coolest kid on the block until I went to a birthday party and this lucky girl had six or seven. It was Cabbage Patch kid heaven!!!! -anonymous 1978 I remember wanting a CPK sooo badly!!I Didnt get one till i was in the 5th grade..Years after the craze..Know what i got BEFORE I ever got a CPK??.....A Koosa!!!!i still have her..Pinkylee.Though now she is missing her tail(disgrunteled teen in a group home I was in)And has a "scar"a burn mark on her side whe she was burned when left at my dads house which cought on fire!I STILL love CPK's,and have quite a few i have gotten over the years..A baby,a preemie,a clown,a crimp and curl,a few regular ones too.and a CPK pet, different from the koosa.i wish i had twins, and the one that came with a pony, and the astronaught one!..sigh..when will i ever grow up??lol -Irisheyesntemper 1974 My stepfather bought my mother one of Xavier Roberts' "Little People" in 1980--I loved that doll, but wasn't allowed to play with it. I can still remember Christmas '83 when I received a "CPK"--finally I had a doll with a signature on it's booty, too. Over the years, I've given away my multitude of "CPK"s, but I am now the proud "mommy" to mother's "Little Person". -SusieSorority123 1975 I love my grama but I was devestated when she bought one of the "fake" CPK. It didn't have the signature or the sewn up butt. I got joked on so bad. -anadyr21 1976 I had a blond CPK I called Emmy or Cleo, I couldn't make up my mind about the name. One of my brother's put dents in the doll's face with a knife. I kept it for a few more years, probably til I was about 12 or so. -FoxyLady22 1979 When our K-mart first got Cabbage Patch's they gave one away in a drawing. You had to be present to win. My mom stuck around for 5 hours waiting for them to draw. She was 6 months pregnant at the time but she won the contest and got my first Cabbage Patch Kid for me. -starr7202 1983
I'm obviously from a different generation than most of you Cabbage Patch Kids owners, but I remember being disgusted when I saw boys with them. I really hated the "sissyfying" that started in the late '70's. -Kirkland 1959 I remember getting my first Cabbage Patch doll when I was 1 year old. That doll has gone with me everywhere even till this day (not every 13 year old I know does that). I probably have around, ::counts:: 9 or so..lol I did get one of those Snacktime dolls, but it liked me so much it wouldn't eat my hair even when I tried to see if it did or not. -shYgIrLy2006 1988 |
